The ICHF team has completed the trip
Tuesday September 11, 2007 11:13:03 PM
The ICHF team has completed the trip to Pune, India. A total of 19 children received operation during this trip, with a number of operations performed for the first time at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital. The patients ranged in age from 2 months of age to 32 years of age. Two patients were adult age at 22 and 32 years of age, but both had congenital heart defects which had not previously been operated upon. One patient, the 32 year old, had been deemed inoperable by a center in the US in 2001 and told that she would need a heart/lung transplant for her problem. The ICHF team provided her with the double patch flap valve ventricular septal defect closure procedure that we pioneered. We performed a total of 3 double patch flap valve procedures during the trip including an eleven year old girl who is pictured here.
Over the next several months the ICHF and the Department of Cardiac Surgery at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital in Pune will develop a strategy for long term assistance and development of pediatric cardiac surgery.
