Guayaquil is the most populous city in Ecuador, with a population exceeding 3.3 million. It is located on the western bank of the Guayas River, which flows into the Pacific Ocean at the Gulf of Guayaquil.

Main sources of income are formal and informal trade, business, agriculture, and aquaculture, but despite this, Guayaquil has the highest rate of unemployment in Ecuador. With a per capita income of only $5,820, Ecuador is one of the poorest nations in Latin America, ranking 99th in the world. Its healthcare system reflects this; the general mortality rate is 4.1 per 1,000 inhabitants. The greatest health problems in Ecuador are malnutrition, diabetes, and heart disease, which is the leading cause of death.
